Homeland
Security:
Bridging
the Transatlantic Gap Conference:
Copenhagen,
September 19-21, 2003 By means of
tactical surprise, determination, and ruthlessness the new terrorism has
proven itself capable of causing mass casualties and creating mass
disruption. The US remains the most acutely threatened society, but no
European country should consider itself immune. The Nordic countries, due
to their open societies and heavily export-based economies share a number
of the societal vulnerabilities of the US. Yet, national protective
initiatives will not do for any of the Western world’s complex and
interdependent societies. Homeland security is thus a transatlantic
concern. The
conference brings together politicians, officials, experts, and opinion
leaders from the Nordic countries and the US to discuss four areas of
common Nordic-American concern: Securing dangerous materials in the former
Soviet Union, cyberterrorism, bioterrorism, and container security. For
